Not letting any salesman talk me into anything. I'll get to listen for myself Tuesday. Just wanted some owner opinions as to whether the 805 (on it's own and without a sub) is producing clean, tight bass? Anyone? Let me know what speakers you are running. Thanks!!!

As an old autosound buff, let me answer your question this way:

What most folks refer to as clean tight bass is actually a combination of several different factors:

1. The Qtc of the subwoofer system (the driver part only - no amplifier), which determines how well the cone movement is controlled by the mechanical suspension system of the driver, and the air suspension system of the enclosure. This can vary greatly amongst makes and models. From my experience, just about most common consumer-grade HT speakers have Qtc of at least 1.0+, which caters to most HT listener's preference of a "warmer" bass and increased bass efficiency (for better Jurassic Park ground shake), albiet at a cost of transient response accuracy.

BTW, this is why I don't buy active subwoofers, opting instead to build my own pasive subs and powering them with a separate amplifier. My current project will have eight 10" drivers.

2. The damping factor of the amplifer driving the subwoofer system. DF denotes an amplifer's ability to control the sub's cone movement electrically. Onkyo is the only one amongst the major AVR manufacturers that list this spec: 60 for most Onkyo AVRs. While not spectacular, it is fairly decent. As with most aspects of amplifer performance having to do with dynamics, damping factor is heavily influenced by the robustness of the power supply. Based on my listening to my own 804, friend's Denon, Marantz, as well as Yamaha, HK, and auditioning in various stores, I would have to say Onkyos (higher-end) rank very near the top in this regard. Yes, there are amps that easily outperform, but you pay accordingly.

3. A commonly misunderstood part of bass reproduction is the fact that a substantial part of the "tightness" in "clean tight bass" actually has little to do with the subwoofer frequency range (120hz or below). Unless you are talking about pipe organ music, most bass notes (drum beats, plucked bass guitar, etc.) consists of a group of mid-bass (500Hz and below) tones immediately preceding the main heavy bass reverberation. Think of it as the punch before the boom. This is the reason why I detest those dinky "cube" satellite + subwoofer combos. Their lack of a proper midrange/woofer driver means their reproduction of the critical midbass section is poor at best.

Of the 3 above factors, No. 1 has the heaviest influence, to a point of easily drowning the other two. You can just about forget doing it with speakers available your neighborhood Frys or Circuit City. Try instead a high-end HT store with a pair of properly set up tower monitors. Oh, this goes without saying... bring a reference bass CD you're intimately familiar with. One of my favorites is Bob James's Obsession - lots of good tight bass notes, of varying frequencies and character, too. Not just the boom-boom type all too common with the pop music ilk.

I am very glad somebody else is interested in the finer points of audio reproduction with AVRs. HDMI 1.3a and upconversion is important, but I buy my AVR to double as pure stereo amp as well. My 875 will be here tomorrow to replace my 804. Can't wait.

Does anyone know if there's a way to make the 805's volume move in full number increments intstead of .5 increments? My TV uses HDMI-CEC to display the volume level on the screen, but it only displays the full number, so it doesn't show up on the screen unless I hit the volume button twice to get to the next full number.

Hi everyone,,

Sorry for question, but i've read a lot of words, but cannot find a solution

I explain..

I've the Tx-SR805 (european model)

i'm using it with a pc

i plugged my audio card with amplifier with an optical wire and the graphic card with a dvi-hdmi cable.

How can i set digital imputs to see monitor and listening audio?

if i assign hdmi audio off , it should get just video signal from hdmi cable ?

but when i select source input, i can select just game/tv (where i assigned hdmi in) or cd (where i assigned optical in) .. but both? how can i?

thanks

there is a way to see on tv and listening with different loudspeakers.. right?

thanks..

You definitely want HDMI audio off. It should only be on when you want to use your television speakers and not your loudspeakers.

Assign the video signal on the HDMI screen to Game/TV. Then assign the optical input also to Game/TV.

Problem is i CANNOT assign same source to 2 different inputs...

if Game tv is already in HDMI IN, i cannot choose it for OPT 1 in...

Either the 875 is different from the 805 or I don't understand what you're trying to do.

Start over. Make sure the HDMI input and the optical input you want to use for your computer aren't assigned to anything else on the HDMI Input screen and the Digital Input screen. Then make the HDMI assignment to Game/TV. When you go to the Digital Input screen, the same HDMI port should be preassigned to Game/TV. Just change it to OPT 1 or Opt 2.

Well I would like to first thank AVS for this wonderful forum and most of all, the great members here who never think twice about helping those of us who are less knowledgeable.

As you can see I've been a member here for awhile but haven't done much posting mostly reading.

My current setup..........

ONKYO 797 AVR

OPPODV971H

EXPLORER 4200HD

OPTOMA H31

GPX CDRW/CD

NINTENDO WII

XBOX 360

PS3 80 GIG

I spent quite some time reading, not all but most of this thread (sigh) over the pass couple of days. As you can see with all the equipment an upgrade was in order for my trusty 797.

I realized that some people may like one brand over the other and vice versa. I had such good experience with my 797 it wasn't hard for me to go with that brand again. When I bought my 797 I bought a 5 year, yes 5 year ext warranty and I never had to pull it out.

Know I will have to sell off my 797, sad to see it go but it has to go no room for it.

I pick mine up at CC cause I seem to have mist quite a few good deals in the earlier part of November. I found that amazon had it on sale currently for $852. I tried to see if CC would match it but they only match with B&M stores only......Or a matter of fact when I went to CC they had it for $1010.00, however the mgr gave it to me for the web price plus my $15 off. Hope fully they put it back on sale for a better price within 30 days so I can bring in my receipt and get the difference.

Once again thanks to all for this thread..........

Can anyone with the standard def. version of Spiderman 3 here tell me how many speakers light up on the 805 front panel? My system is setup correctly. All my DVD's play back 5.1 Dolby Digital and some are DTS and these are lighting up all 5 speakers on the display. For some reason Spiderman 3 only shows 2 channel Dolby so I have to use PLIIx Movie mode for only this DVD. Wierd. I am playing my DVD's on a 500 disc changer, the Sony DVP-CX995V. I bet it's another case of overzealous Sony anti-piracy software.

Ok first time post here, I just bought the 805 and I'm having a couple of problems that I hoped someone might be able to help out with. Let me state that I've set up several receivers in the past I had the Onkyo 575 and I currently own the Yamaha 5790. When setting up these receivers I never had any problems but this was mainly due to using it as an audio only receiver. Well I wanted to run all my video and audio through this. My equiptment consists of a Toshiba 5183 CRT RPTV (DVI only), TWC HDDVR, Toshiba HDA2 HDDVD , Cambridge Audio CD and a Rotel RB-1080 stereo power amp running to Energy Connoisseurs 5.1 system. Well I hooked everything up, TV with DVI to HDMI cable to the monitor out on the receiver, HDDVR with HDMI to the HDMI 1 input on the receiver, Toshiba HD DVD with HDMI to HDMI 2 input on the receiver. I had a picture on both the TV and the DVD but I didn't have any audio. I switched over to CD and the front speakers played just fine in direct and stereo mode, the center and rears kicked in when I went to surround settings. I was thinking this may have something to do with the TV having only a DVI connection that could not pass audio, but not sure how this would effect anything if the HDMI was running from the cable box and the HDMI was running from the DVD to the receiver. It says "no signal" or something like that on the receiver when I have it on DVD or Cable setting. I also went through and set all inputs to HDMI on the receiver for the DVD and TV/Cable.

The second problem I'm having is that when I hooked up the Rotel 1080 to the receiver using the trigger I could not tell if it was turning on the amp and cutting it off when the receiver was turned on and off. With my current Yamaha the protection light on the Rotel cuts on and off as I turn on the Yamaha and turn off likewise. Is there anything I'm missing here?

My last question, not really a question but advice, since I'm using the Rotel for my fronts would I be better off with the 605 since I don't need as much power, or since I only paid $750 for the 805 just stick with it if I can get through the other issues I was having....just to note I got frustrated and unhooked the Onkyo and went back to my Yamaha for the time being. Any input would be helpful.

Do you have HDMI Audio set to YES (menu 7.5). If so set it to NO, change to a different input for a couple seconds, then change back.

The trigger output is only active for zone 2. I don't think anybody has figured out a way to make it work in the main zone.

Just wanted to say that my $529 805 ordered on Thursday arrived Saturday (along with my four new monoprice HDMI cables) to replace my HK AVR-635. Setup was a breeze and the speaker calibration worked much better than my HK. Using a SPL meter at the main seating position everything was at 73db +/- 2db. I switched all crossovers to 80Hz and tweaked the speakers to match each other with the SPL meter. Everything just works and even though the unit was Onkyo refurbished it looks brand new.

I'm using THX Cinema for my HD DVR since I used to use Logic 7 on the HK. Is that what most people are using? Since it is a mix of DD 2.0 and DD 5.1 audio I used to leave it on Logic 7 to keep the surround type constant. I'm not clear as to what THX Cinema does to a DD 5.1 signal. From the manual I could only gather what it did to a 2.0 signal. Any insight?

Anyway, just wanted to post something positive since threads like this tend to accumulate more negative than positive comments.

$529?

You got it from ShopOnkyo right? Was it ever $549 on the website? I got it for $599.

Did you get the mic along with it? I have a unit coming via Fed Ex today.

It was on ShopOnkyo with 10% off, another $10 off for joining their club, free shipping and no tax.

It came with everything that you would expect. They state that it doesn't come with any cables so I was concerned about the mic and power cable. I guess all that you miss is some crappy composite cable thrown in for the hell of it and three AA batteries. The box included the remote, setup mic, power cable, AM & FM antennas, manual, a few other sheets of paper, and a box that says refurbished item.
