I mean, you would normally use the tripod to adjust the position or angle of whatever is attached to it.

I don't angle the meter much though. I place it far back to eliminate any shadow and to measure the screen from the seating viewing angle.

This is to eliminate any color shift from screen angle.
You dont place this meter far back in the seating area though for autocal do you?

Not necessarily all the way back to the seating, but I could. There's no difference in doing so.

Usually around 6ft back or so is far enough in most rooms to avoid any shadow and to more importantly allow lining up the meter's viewing angle with the seating's viewing angle.

Not sure if it’s been in the thread/s before. Here’s a nice comparison of SpyderX Pro, Spyder5 and i1Display Pro:

Result, most accurate colorimeter:

1. i1Display Pro
2. SpyderX Pro (close second)
3. Spyder5 Pro

But don't overlook that the i1Display supports spectral characteristic corrections (which you would use on each type of light source for the display you are measuring) whereas the SpyderX does not support this.

The Spyder5 did. Not sure why they stopped supporting it for the X.

For the X you would need to use a matrix correction, but that means you need to have the Spyder, the display, and a spectro all together yourself to do.

But yeah, the X was a big improvement over the 5.

Also doesn't look like they compared low light sensitivity / accuracy where I believe the i1 Display Pro should handily beat the SpyderX and can come in very useful when calibrating high contrast projectors gamma such as a JVC.

Technically all you need is the meter and it's serial number matched cradle/holder which contains a sliding cover over its white calibration tile.

Yes normally these go for $350-500 used on eBay.
My i1 Pro 2 should be arriving today and I'll be diving in this weekend. Will I need to install any drivers if I'm only going to be using it with Autocal? My SpiderX didn't require additional drivers, but I'm seeing references to a "2006 driver" for the i1 Pro 2 and wasn't sure whether this is something I should be tracking down. If a driver is needed, pointers to a specific version/location/file name would be very much appreciated.

You definitely need drivers for the i1 Pro 2.

Are you sure you didn't need drivers for the SyderX? Not the Datacolor drivers?

I just bought a EFI ES-2000 Spectrophotometer which hasnt arrived yet, do I have to add any drivers to it? BTW its a brand new one never been used.

You can't.

the i1 Pro 3 is a completely different meter and driver.

The i1 Pro and i1 Pro 2 were essentially the same driver and both shared a common "legacy" mode of operation which Autocal used which is why i1 Pro worked when they specified i1 Pro 2.

i1 Pro 3 is a completely different and new beast and has no such legacy mode of operation. It would have to be explicitly programed for and supported and since they don't mention it I am sure it wont work.

If you want to use other meters I would recommend going to the Alternative meters for Autocal thread. This new Autocal 13 will already work with the current autocal meter mods to allow using any ArgyIICMS meter as well as a dedicated mod for i1 Display Pro and similar meters.

I already own a Spyder5. Can it be used with Autocal 13 on an NZ8 with a modified DLL? I read the first few pages on the Alternant meters page, but still not sure if it's supported. If it is, am I losing much over a SpyderX?

Last year I tested a DLL for Spyder5 under Autocal 12. But since nobody has an NZ unit yet, there is no confirmation, if the DLLs for Autocal 12 will run under Autocal 13 too.

I would say that it’s extremely likely that the dll mods will work which would mean you could use the Spyder5.

Good to know. I'll hold off buying a SpyderX and test whatever will likely work for a Spyder5 under 13. I'm assuming that there's no difference really between these two devices.

I mean people programmed the DLL mods for like 1 Autocal version, but they all work on every version so far that uses those meters.

So since 13 uses the same meters as 11 and 12, this is why I am sure it will work.

The stock DLLs have not even changed at all between 12 and 13 either.

Hi,
if someone just wants to use the existing Spyder 5 with the new JVC AutoCal version 12/1.10 without having to worry about installing other drivers and programs, can send me a PM. You only have to replace the dcxmtr.dll in the AutoCal directory with a "new" one, then AutoCal 12 will also accept the Spyder 5.
Peter
I have PM'd Peter for his "new" .dll files to replace the dcxmtr.dll used by Autocal. I guess that there's also Option 1 (FakeSensor and ArgyllCMS) or 3 if need be. Looking for the easier method and where to obtain the replacement .dll file. Thanks!

Option 3 provides publicly downloadable DLLs. See the first post in the Alternative Meters thread for details.

Thanks Dominic, but Peter's offer of a direct DLL replacement for Spyder5 sounds like the cleanest/easiest approach. Option 3 requires purchase of CS ZRO in addition to more steps and code.

I also saw were Tedd said "The Spyder 4/5 are not reading well ~2 nits; SpyderX can read lower (~0.03 nits)". In addition, AC 12/13 changed to work with the SpyderX pointed at the screen vs. Spyder5 at the projector lens. Probably not a big deal, but if I don't hear back from @OMARDRIS concerning my PM request for clean Spyder5 replacement over the SpyderX .dll, I'll put the $35 for CS ZRO towards a SpyderX and apparently get better readings with no SW changes. No rush since the NZ8 have still not landed in the US.
