Marantz has introduced two new additions to its reference home theater lineup: the AV 20 AV Preamplifier and AMP 20 Power Amplifier. Both models follow the company’s recent AV 10 and AMP 10 and are designed to give home theater users additional configuration options at the top end of Marantz’s lineup.

The AV20 and AMP20 are developed and assembled at the Shirakawa Audio Works facility in Japan. Marantz notes that both products are designed to function either together or alongside other models in the lineup. The AV20 and AMP20 feature the iconic porthole display and an industrial design which includes multi-layer chassis construction with heavy copper use. On the AV20, a fold-down front panel hides less-frequently used controls for a cleaner appearance. Both products are equipped with fascia plates with adjustable side illumination.

The AV20 relies on Analog Devices SHARC dual-core DSP and 32-bit two-channel DACs, with dedicated jitter reduction. This provides the power needed to process everything from high-resolution stereo to today’s most immersive formats, including Dolby Atmos, IMAX Enhanced, DTS:X Pro, and AURO-3D.

For calibration and room correction, the AV20 comes with Audyssey MultEQ XT32. A microphone is included for automatic calibration of speaker sizes, distances, and level. That’s not all though. There’s also support for optional Dirac Live Room Correction and Dirac Live Bass Control which gives users the ability to calibrate up to four independent subwoofers. Later this year, Marantz plans to add support for Dirac Live Active Room Treatment (ART) through a firmware update, which will be available as a separate purchase.

Each of the AV20’s seven HDMI inputs can pass through up to 8K/60Hz or 4K/120Hz video. The new high-res user interface makes setup and customizations more straightforward. Both RCA and XLR outputs are available and up to 13.4 channel system configurations can be used. There’s also multiple analog and digital inputs. Streaming and multi-room audio are integrated through the HEOS platform. The AV20 is also compatible with Roon, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, AirPlay 2, and Bluetooth.

The AMP20 is a 12-channel power amplifier rated at 200 watts per channel into 8 ohms (1kHz, 0.05 percent THD, two channels driven). It can also be reconfigured in bridged mode to power up to six channels at 400 watts each, or bi-amp up to six speakers. Marantz notes that the AMP20 can be combined with the AV20 or other Marantz components, including CINEMA 30 and AV10. If a system requires more than 12 channels, users can opt for the 16-channel AMP10 instead.

Both the AV20 and AMP20 will be available starting today at $6,000 each and can be purchased through Marantz.com and selected retailers.

What’s the cost of adding Dirac?

I’d like to upgrade from my Marantz 7702mkII. Maybe I’m way off base, but my feeling has been that Audyssey is basically abandon-ware unchanged for a decade but still what Marantz sticks to. $6k for a processor is spendy for me, but doable if I really wanted. But that depends on the net cost with upgrading past Audyssey.

It's anywhere from $250 all the way up to $600 depending on if you want both Bass Control and Room Correction. I'm sure ART will probably be the most expensive when it comes out.

If ART is being introduced with new hardware I wonder if they are not able to implement it on any existing devices. Was hoping my A10H would get it at some point.

Edit - I see the video just says Denon/Marantz and is not hardware specific so hopefully this does become an option for DLBC compatible models.

lol why isn’t the amp20 13 channels? Why announce the release of a 13 channel prepro alongside a 12 channel amp? Am I missing something?

Hey, a $28k WRX Premium a few years ago is now $38k. That's way above inflation. Oh, but now it has Eyesight "standard" so it'll slam on the brakes when it gets confused with reflectors on the highway and has a jumbo laggy 10" vertical screen no one asked for or wanted and has me looking at used vehicles instead of new.... So are we really surprised D&M would jack up their crap as well? Everyone is jacking up their stuff and well, "Covid!"

Covid has been "over" for years now in any real meaning sense of impediment, but hey, it's a convenient LIE for GREED. The problem is they forget Economics 101. As prices go up, sales go down.

So much for them only releasing ART for the “top tier” models like you were saying before you completely deleted and edited the post! I think it’s better to wait until we get all of the information before speculating.

Good on them for promising to release it to 3800h owners! That’s one of the reasons why I love denon!!

My first big question. Can you "secretly add" more inputs like you can on the AV10? I forget the exact number, but on the AV10 as it comes, set up only lists like 8 or 9 assignable inputs. But using a special code, you can add like 3, 4 or 5 (again, don't recall) AUX inputs. They aren't remote control directly accessed, but you can get them via scrolling or the front panel wheel.

I actually like the AV20 better for my 7.4.6 desires (right now 7.2.6). Most will find this dumb, but it has 1 more trigger, an extra analog input, and has old school video hooks. Definitely more "full featured" vs the AV10 in my book (less 2 channels I'll never use). If it just had an old school digital output (optical or RCA) it would be nearly perfect.

Its expensive, but cheaper than the 10, which allows some extra cash to get a sweet 2 channel preamp with HT bi-pass for music (the AV10 isn't my cup of tea for music). With the right preamp, I could get the digital output I desire.

Hmmmmmm.......

are devices with 2.2 even available yet and other than a highend GPU what is going to utilize the higher standard in the forseeable future? I get it. It would be great if it had it but I suspect the replacement for nearly 3yo AV10 will be one of the first to support it in the D&M line. But very few will be utilizing such devices.

Cars went up $10k in the past 5 years, why not AVRs.....

I’m not seeing any mention of QMS, I would’ve thought the brand new AV20 would’ve implemented this HDMI 2.1b feature?…or maybe I’m overlooking this? Is the new AV20 spec HDMI 2.1/2.1a/2.1b ? As QMS is HDMI 2.1b according to the link below.

I have specifically asked about “QMS” on several different forums and when told they will get back with me I hear crickets. The interviews by the usual YouTube channels with Phil Jones don’t seem to want to ask about “QMS” though they’ll ask about VRR, Freesync, etc.. My guess is Sound United invested in an initial large amount of the faulty PanasonicSolutions/Nuvoton HDMI 2.1/8K chipsets and needs to use them, otherwise why wouldn’t you use the version b chipset from Nuvoton that has fixed their previous faulty chipset, on the new Marantz AV20 ?

Oh, well what I did was a factory reset, and am trying again. Started at 12:20P ET. This time it says 'updating' and is progressing. At 21% with 9 minutes to go. I can't be sure, but last time it may have only been on 'wait.' I'll post updates here. Factory reset is a pain because of the setup process, and I will need to load my Dirac settings again once it's done, but as of now the unit does not appear to be bricked.
