PC to AVR to TV - no sound when TV is not turned on

Hello. I have my computer (Windows 10) connected to a SONY STR-DN860 receiver using a HDMI cable. AVR is in turn connected to my Samsung TV using another HDMI cable (using the ARC HDMI slot of the TV).

When I have both AVR and TV turned on, the output from my PC works fine - both audio and video. However when I turn off the TV, like when I only want to listen to music (from my PC) through the receiver, I get no sound, despite the AVR being detected by the computer, volume mixer shows it as the default audio device, also showing activity when music plays, however there's no sound coming from the speakers.

Any idea what might be wrong with this?

I'm including screenshots to prove that the AVR is detected just fine when TV is off.

Sometimes sound can be recovered if you force an HDMI re-synchronization by switching the AVR to a different input and back again.

Make sure you have an up-to-date AMD graphics driver. It includes the HDMI audio driver. Get it from the Web site of either AMD or the manufacturer of your graphics card. Microsoft often provides out-of-date graphics drivers.

It's a side effect of buggy HDMI synchronization in the HDMI audio driver in the computer.

AVR settings >video>HDMI set-up >HDMI audio out is set to AVR.

Sorry about the late response.
I've tried to simplify the setup and rule out the TV, so I just unplugged it from the AVR. Then I've tried fiddling with all the HDMI settings of the AVR, then updated R480X drivers (there was new release in the meantime), tried fiddling more with speaker setup in Windows, also tried changing the resolution of the AVR's display (as it's presented in Windows), none of that did anything. Still getting no sound.

Wondering if this might be faulty AVR, or maybe some bad implementation, because this used to work with me with different AVR (admittedly, this was also with Windows 8.1 (not 10) and different GFX card).

Or I'm missing something really basic, but can't imagine what...

Another thing to try would be a different HDMI input on the receiver. Although they should all act the same, sometimes they don't. The front-panel connection generally tends to be the most different.

Also, it probably wouldn't hurt to contact a Sony Customer Service Representative. They might have some suggestions.

You can rule out which one has problem by using another HDMI device to test AVR.
I don't think it's AVR issue.
Does your video card have a separated audio output?

It's just HDMI and you have to live with it.
When I play my music from the computer it doesn't even go thru HDMI, it has its own DAC to analog.
(The computer also has HDMI cable to the Marantz but when I play music it is thru a USB DAC to Analog connection.) Video HDMI, Audio Analog)

But because the Marantz also has a connection to the TV (of Course) it says, well, You want to play something? You better turn on the TV so I can see it, even if I don't have the video output from the computer on display (I leave it on cable signal display). But it will do this even if the Cable signal is off, (so only Marantz screen saver).

I just turn the TV on and be done with it. Sometimes, after a few minutes of handshake I guess, I can actually turn the TV back off and the Marantz will continue to play the signal from the computer.
I do not have ARC HDMI.
Using a Marantz 7008.

I HATE HDMI.

My Intel Graphics Control Panel has an option under display -> audio. See below.
My Sammy Plasma also has a "Picture Off" option.
Using both, I can turn the TV picture off and still have audio through the AVR (a Pioneer).

It's a combination of a sync issue between the AVR and Windows. I had the same issue when I used a Denon X1100. I upgraded to a Denon X3200 and no longer have that problem. Before when I turned the TV off, the audio would just stop so I couldn't listen to music w/o my TV on. The laptop would say default audio device disconnected. It would also do this sometimes when I switched HDMI Inputs on my TV. Now when I switch HDMI Inputs on the TV or turn the TV off, there is about a 2-3 second pause then the music comes back on. It's like it lost signal, then reconnected. Sort of how there is that pause/signal loss when switching video resolutions. I would try switching HDMI inputs on your TV and see if the music keeps playing. If it does try turning your TV off after that.

Try a fiber optic cable from your computer, if your just sreaming music.
